I will talk back to authority
I wonder where I got that from
Dad said my son, you got that from me
I’ve been stubborn since I was young
I’ll feel my feelings and doubt if they’re true
I wonder who gave that to me
Mom said oh son, I gave that to you
My mind is my death and reprieve
I’ve made mistakes for as long as my heart can remember
Son you are smart, do better than me
I’m giving up faster and faster
Why does this pain destroy me
Grandpa said son, I am the one
Who passed down to you crushing defeat
I spend my time searching for answers
Why do I cry desperately
Grandma said son, you’re overcome
With the wandering plaguing me
I’ve made mistakes for as long as my heart can remember
Son you are wise, do better than me
You say mistakes but all I see are hearts beating tender
Spirit, sincerity, depth, and curiosity
As for me, I’m turning inward
Thinking about my poor son
Carrying with him all my mistakes
And the man they have made me become
